Shelley Greene began playing the harp as a 3rd Grader in Richmond Public Schools in Richmond, Virginia. Her talent was encouraged by now-retired harp teacher, Mrs. Anne Williams. Mrs. Williams encouraged Shelley, as well as the other young harpists in Richmond’s unique program, to explore and study her gift and to use it at every opportunity. Shelley continued studying the harp in middle and high school, studying with Mary Jane (Smith) D’Arville-RPS Harp Instructor, Elizabeth Dechent-Private Harp Instructor and Lynne Abbey-Lee—Richmond Symphony Orchestra Harpist. It was during her latter high school years, with her parents’ full support, that Shelley decided to pursue Music as a profession. Under the guidance of world-renowned harpist Jeanne Chalifoux, Shelley earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Harp Performance at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. The intensive 4-year program gave Shelley the opportunity to devote her full attention to the development of her musical technique and sound. Also during her tenure at Peabody, Shelley had the honor of being chosen to attend the Salzedo Harp Colony in Camden, Maine where she spent 6 weeks living with and studying with internationally respected harpist and educator, the late Alice Chalifoux. After graduating from Peabody, Shelley returned to Richmond, VA to teach harp and elementary classroom music in Richmond Public Schools. Her desire for additional musical education led her to Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music where Shelley studied Orchestral Repertoire with Houston Symphony Orchestra’s principal harpist, Paula Page. Shelley returned to her hometown with new knowledge, which she used in her position as Adjunct Professor of Music at the historic Virginia Union University and in her career as a private music teacher. In April of 1999, Shelley founded Harmony of Virginia. Harmony’s mission is to provide the highest quality musical services to add a touch of elegance to any occasion. Through her work with Harmony, Shelley collaborates with many professionally-trained musicians, audio-engineers and event planners on both live projects and studio projects. Always desiring to learn, Shelley earned a Master of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her goal is to use these skills to one day expand Harmony’s services to include a music school which will serve citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia who are from artistically underrepresented and socioeconomically-challenged populations. |
